Forward Head Posture

I’m sorry it’s been so long between emails, I’ve been really busy with further study, learning all about new Bowen techniques that can help you.
 
While I was studying I heard a really interesting presentation on Forward Head Posture and the effects it can have on the body. It was fascinating. Forward Head posture can not only cause tension in the neck, shoulder and upper back, and give you headaches and bite problems, but it also can lead to much more. For example, uncorrected FHP can potentially lead to things like thoracic outlet syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic strains and early degeneration and arthritis. “F.H.P. leads to long term muscle strain, disc herniations, arthritis, and pinched nerves” Mayo Clinic Health Letter volume 18 #3, March 200 
 
 
 There is much evidence suggesting that postural positions can affect the nerve tissue by altering blood flow to the spinal cord. Imagine the damage that does to a body. On a lighter note, posture can also greatly affect mood. You can test this yourself by smiling, or raising your chest, and you will quickly see a change in your mood.  
I am hoping to receive a copy of this research, and I will post more on it when I can. I just wanted to share this amazing research with you!

Newsletter - Sleep Hygiene

Sleep 

Many of my clients have said they have trouble sleeping.

Does that include you? 
If your body has time to repair itself you may find yourself suffering less from tension, aches and pains. If you have trouble sleeping, writing down information about your sleeping habits in a diary can help you to find a cause for your sleepless nights. Even practising relaxation techniquescan help. It's as easy as clenching, holding for a count of three, and releasing each muscle starting from the feet and working all the way up to your head and face. Remember, even if you can't sleep, sometimes just trying to rest and relax as much as possible can help your body repair itself. 

Sleep hygiene

Professional sleep experts often refer to what you do yo prepare for bed as your Sleep hygiene. Some things you could do to to prepare for sleep

  • Have a routine, for example: wash face, brush teeth, go to the toilet, change into pyjamas.
  • Go to bed at the same time each night
  • Set your alarm for the same time each morning - and get up the same time each morning
  • Take a hot shower at night (not after a Bowen treatment, or it will cancel out the treatment)
  • Listen to some relaxing music 
  • Use you bed only for sleeping and intimacy. Reading, watching Tv and playing/working on the computer really doesn't help you sleep! They stimulate your brain, which makes it very difficult to allow your body to slow down. 
  • If you have a mind that always races when you are trying to relax, put a notepad and pen by your bedside table so you can jot down anything that you want to remember in the morning. That way you won't have to stay up all night worrying about it.

12 Tips for a Happier You

I first wrote this article as tips to help people through depression and tough times, but when I thought about it, these are great tips to make every day a little better. These tips are things I have personally found helpful, as have other people I know. Some of these tips you may have heard before or you might think are common knowledge but I can guarantee it makes a difference. Most of them are tips I have been told by health care professionals. I believe that general wellbeing is very important, and can often make a huge difference in your physical pain.

Migraines

Have you got Migraines, Sinus Issues, Neck Aches or Headaches?
